Introduction

Fes is the spiritual heart of Morocco and home to Fes el-Bali—the largest, most complex medieval medina in the world. Walking into Fes is like traveling back in time. It is a completely car-free urban zone where goods are still transported by mules.

Wander through medieval streets lined with spice markets, historic madrasas, and active craft workshops. With its ancient tanneries, Fes remains the unrivaled center of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship.

Why Visit

To explore the world's oldest medieval medina, see the ancient leather tanneries in action, and stand in the birthplace of the world's oldest degree-granting university.

History

Founded in 789 AD by Idris I, Fes served as Morocco's imperial capital for centuries. It became a global center of science and religion during the Islamic Golden Age.

Local Culture & Lifestyle

Fes is defined by its deep intellectual, spiritual, and artisanal traditions. It is home to thousands of generational craftsmen specialized in leather, ceramics, brass, and weaving.

Best Time to Visit

Fes is best visited during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) to enjoy warm weather and comfortable walking temperatures. Summer is extremely hot.

Local Food

Fassi Pastilla (flaky pie filled with chicken, almonds, cinnamon, and sugar), tajines with prunes and almonds, and spicy harira soup.

Where to Stay

Grand, palatial historic Riads inside the medina walls, featuring highly detailed tile mosaics (zellige) and large central courtyards.

Travel Tips

  • We strongly recommend hiring an official, licensed local guide for your first day in Fes Medina; with over 9,000 alleys, it is incredibly easy to get lost.
  • Avoid unofficial guides (faux guides) who approach you in the street; rely on your riad or agency to book certified guides.
